#MusicMonday – June 25, 2018

Songs about food that don’t really allude to food…

It’s the perfect advertisement!

I’m not one to chase after “novelty” songs, but there are some that have such a fun beat to them.  And as long as three stupid little chipmunks have no involvement – yes, I’m one of probably, well, no one that immensely dislikes Alvin and the Chipmunks – then I’m sold.

I first discovered this week’s song choice while working on a Throwback Thursday article in August 2016.  The commercials that week were about dairy dessert topping (Thursday’s was about Cool Whip, the Flashback Friday article was about Reddi Whip).  I used to try to find a theme song of the week to fit the particular theme of whatever commercial(s) I was featuring that week.  I had recalled an album called Whipped Cream and Other Delights, and figured there had to be a song about, well, whipped cream.

So, why choose such a song for Music Monday?  Well, why not have a little fun?  It’s Monday after all!

“Whipped Cream” was featured on Side A of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass’s 1965 LP Whipped Cream and Other Delights. With an oddly suggestive album cover featuring a woman (model Dolores Erickson) covered in whipped cream (actually, shaving cream and chiffon) from head to toe, it is no wonder the song wound up as part of The Dating Game, as the bachelorette’s intro song. Further, it also sounds like another Alpert song (and Dating Game staple) “Spanish Flea,” which was the bachelor’s song.

The album itself (no information on the song) reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums (now the Billboard 200) chart in 1965 and 1966.  It had one other song to be part of The Dating Game – the date reveal song, aka “Lollipops and Roses.”  The album itself was the group’s most popular, and album cover iconic.

And now that you know it exists, why not just give in and listen to it?

It’s cheesy, but fun, don’t you think?

And that’s precisely what we need for our Monday.  I hope you enjoyed this, and that it set your week on the right path.  Have a great Monday, and don’t forget to enjoy the music!
