Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Irish and “Irish for Today” peeps!
I myself am part-Irish, but on St. Patrick’s Day, you are Irish even when you aren’t actually Irish. It’s the day where everyone wears green, drinks green beer, eats cornbeef and cabbage (and Irish Soda Bread!), and are after the “Lucky Charms.”
It is a magical day.
There could possibly be only one more magical day, and there hasn’t been a unicorn-centric holiday. Ooooh, I like that.
Someone get on that unicorn holiday!
Anyways, I have this annual tradition of watching the 2004 St. Patrick’s Day segment from Late Night With Conan O’Brien when Conan traveled to Ireland, taught schoolchildren about Shaquille O’Neal, found his ancestral castle, and chased his hat across a windy countryside. I may not watch his current talk show, but that segment, for me, is a classic.
One thing I found on some old tapes I was transferring almost ten years ago was a 1987 St. Patrick’s Day Top 10 from the then-Late Night with David Letterman, in which Letterman delivered an all things St. Patrick’s Day Parade-themed list.
