Previously, on Throwback Thursday…
Jerome proves he’s winning at life, soda drinking, and Pizza Hut birthday parties.
He was even nice to a girl!
The one thing I love about the stuff you find on your old videos is that you unlock some memory of your past, whether you knew it vividly, or something in the dark recesses triggers a response. You find some deep emotional attachment, or you respond with “I really liked this?” I’ve reacted both ways to much of the stuff I liked as a kid.
When I was conducting a test run of my copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie last week, I had actually forgotten there was a Pizza Hut commercial at the beginning, much like the one at the beginning of The Land Before Time (which was yesterday’s commercial pick). And while that was about winning at birthday parties, this one is about winning at baseball…by making that all-important catch in Right Field.
We have our cute-as-a-button Right Fielder, and it’s a little more than obvious that he is a typical tyke playing baseball – stick them in the outfield and they daydream. That is, until something actually happens, something huge, something…
Hit play and find out what that something is!
And yes, I did recycle John Fogerty’s song “Centerfield” for this video (which was used in last week’s Flashback Friday). I couldn’t help it. It actually was a mistake in memory on my part – I thought the kid played Centerfield until I watched the video last week, but I figured this was the perfect song, so why not?
So our little unnamed baseball player did something huge…he made the all-important catch!
That would be my reaction too!
And this means celebration, both on the field and at Pizza Hut.
Our voiceover reminds viewers that as the proud sponsor of Little League Baseball, they welcome all the players and coaches who make it great.
And this kid has firmly secured his position, wouldn’t you say?
Oh, and did you totally notice Goldberg from The Mighty Ducks as the catcher?
As far as I’m aware, both commercials featured this week were exclusively on their respective home videos, which makes them rare if you still have your original videocassette copies.
And if you own a VCR, why wouldn’t you?
And there you have it, this week’s Flashback Friday is makin’ it a great way to end the week.
Throwback Thursday and Flashback Friday will return next week!
Have a great weekend!
Pizza Hut, proving that you can win at life in more ways than one.
This set isn’t the first go-around at Pizza Hut advertising for this particular time frame. Here was a 1989 commercial that aired on network television.
