In response to this writing prompt:
“It’s never a good idea to discuss religion or politics with people you don’t really know.” Agree or disagree?
I totally agree with this statement. These are two “touchy”/”hot button” issues that are inappropriate to discuss in mixed company of people we already know, let alone around people we don’t know. Like no two people being alike, not everyone shares the same religious views/preferences or political preferences/standpoints. The way to alienate anyone is to begin to berate them for their views just because they don’t fit your worldview.
I’m also of the belief that on Facebook, the conversations of both should be kept to a circle that doesn’t mind the discussion. But, when that fails, just ignore whoever is trying to incite the conversation. That’s the beauty of free speech – you’re free to ignore it. 🙂

But isn’t the point of discussion to discuss opposing views? When did we become afraid of having open discussions even if we disagree? Why does everything that someone may have a different opinion on have to be offensive? Why can’t people simply discuss opposing views anymore?

I totally agree – the right to free speech is what truly makes us a free country. I’m convinced everything thinks war will break out over conflicting conversation. It’s a shame when it doesn’t seem to matter if we have an opinion, as long as it doesn’t interfere with someone else’s opinion.
