It’s #FlashbackFriday. You Wanna See Something Cool?

Like…video openings?

Keeping in theme with yesterday’s article, the humble videocassette was still a big deal in the mid-1990s, even as pay-per-view tried its darndest to compete.  However successful pay-per-view was at the time, physical media still reigned supreme.  Because even if the pay-per-view companies wanted nothing more than to get your lucrative video store dollars, citing convenience, home video still allowed you to pause, stop, rewind, and fast forward.  It would take quite a few years for pay-per-view to promise such things (at least, without you having to record the program you purchased).

So, physical media it is.  And that’s what we’re showcasing on this Flashback Friday.

Today’s video collection is the videocassette opening for the 1997 print of Jeff Foxworthy: You Might Be a Redneck…, released as part of Showtime’s Comedy Superstars collection.  The same material appears before Jeff Foxworthy: Check Your Neck).  I actually got both of these videos as a gift, in a two-pack, when I was seventeen years old.  I know that doesn’t sound exciting these days, but I enjoyed his comedy when I was a kid.  And like I said, it was a gift.

The opening to this video features two movies set for sell-through release in November 1997, as well as a whole cavalcade of by that time classic comedies that Paramount offered on video for good prices, set to a nice catchy tune.

Contained on this video…

The charming story of Greg Kinnear as a con artist sentenced to work an “actual job” for one year…and the difference he makes in the Dead Letters department of the postal service.

I remember the previews for this movie, but I have never seen it.

Also featured…

The feature-length adventures of MTV’s most dimwitted music-loving teenagers, on the hunt for their precious television.

This one I have seen.  Granted, I rented it (on video!), and I’m pretty sure I recorded it at some point off of one of the movie channels.  I remember it being funny, and if I remember correctly, the last actual episode of Beavis and Butt-Head aired right around the time the movie was released for sale.

And finally,

This montage of awesomeness…

Ooooh, so good!  So much win in one video, these are all classics!  We even knew that in 1997.

So whenever you’re ready, click play and watch the beginning of this video!

I especially love the clips from the different comedies set to Footloose – what a great montage, and an even better song!

That commercial didn’t lie – these were…

Can you say that about alot of movies these days?  These just hold up so well.

Not sure about Dear God, but the ones in the montage certainly do!

Well, if the mere fact that it is Friday didn’t put a smile on your face, I hope this helped!

But hey, we’ve got…

As long as you’re ok with a Jeff Foxworthy comedy special.

Please be ok with that.

Have a fantastic Flashback Friday, and a great weekend!
