#MusicMonday – October 9, 2017

Ah yes, week 2 of Music Moooooonday’s Halloween Music compilation!

It begins NOW!

I spent a good portion of last week completing my contribution to Retroist’s Saturday Night Frights Halloween Podcast, which is the only one that invites members of the Retroist community to contribute their memories on a given topic.  In 2015, we covered The Twlight Zone, in 2016, we all picked a horror movie to discuss, and this year, we’re talking about Stephen King.  As someone who has read several novels and has seen some of his films, I knew I’d be at home covering this topic.

So, writing and recording actually were the inspiration for this week’s Music Monday.  Blame that for inspiring this!

This week’s Music Monday is from 1989, by a group I don’t listen to, but King called himself a fan.  He invited the group to his home in Bangor, Maine while they were in New England on tour.  King gave Dee Dee Ramone a copy of the novel Pet Semetary.  An hour later, Dee Dee had the lyrics written for the song that would become attached to the film adaptation of this novel.

The video was shot in January 1989 at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York, with the group playing in a hydraulic platform placed inside an open grave, which was lowered until the the end, when a horde covers the band in a headstone that says “The Ramones.”  Also of note, this was the final song to feature Dee Dee Ramone, who would be replaced by CJ Ramone.

Cameos in this video include Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, as well as members of Cleveland-based punk rock band The Dead Boys, who were active in the mid to late 1970s, again in 1986, and then in 2004 and 2005.

The song is featured on their 1989 album Brain Drain. The song was one of their biggest radio hits, and a staple at their concerts throughout the 1990s.  This song charted and peaked at #4 on Billboard’s Modern Rock tracks in 1989.

Fun Fact: The song won the Razzie Award for Worst Original Song in 1989.

So, why delay it any further?  Have a listen to the 1989 song from the 1989 movie of the same name, “Pet Semetary” by The Ramones!

Music Moooooonday will be back next week with another spooky song as we count down to Halloween!

Have a great Monday!
