People are looking at the world through some very different glasses. I mean, we can argue that 2020 is best viewed through beer goggles, because it has just been that kind of year, but in 1989, people were looking through a whole other kind of glasses.
A very cool, “futuristic” kind of glasses, as only 1989 could envision as futuristic!
The future’s so bright, we gotta wear equally brightly-colored shades…right?

In today’s merchandising tie-in of a commercial from 1989, Back to the Future Part II and Pizza Hut certainly think so!

Pizza Hut’s Solar Shades promotional tie-in happened during 1989, to coincide with the release of Back to the Future Part II. The Sunglasses were available for $1.99 with the purchase of any Pizza Hut Pizza. Four different pairs, a new one available each week as supplies allowed.
I was seven years old in November 1989 (my birthday was the month before), and I absolutely remember these sunglasses. They’re super 1980s, the kind of thing that reminds you of funky 1980s artwork, clothing, and MTV. No self-respecting person in 2020 would actually wear these (but some of us aren’t, so we would!), but in 1989, they were totally cool.
Pizza Hut sponsored Back to the Future Part II, right down to having a futuristic Pizza Hut storefront in Hill Valley, as well as their logo (albeit a futuristic one) on the mylar wrapper for the dehydrated pizza the McFly family ate.
“Gee mom, you sure know how to hydrate a pizza!”
As for those sunglasses, even Dinosaur Dracula sported them, AND wrote an article about the experience of owning a pair…and acquiring that pair secondhand, along with a different pair!
They can be found on the secondhand market on eBay, Etsy, and even Poshmark! They look crazy by today’s standards, but seriously, they have quite a nostalgia factor.
The black shades with the neon pink arms look so familiar. I swear my brother may have had them from a visit to Pizza Hut. I know that was where we got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack and concert album (OMG, remember that?!) from. I swear he may have had those glasses. I’m probably wrong, but they just look too familiar!

I would have worn those in the 80’s, I probably did…. while I was break dancing in my Members Only jacket and parachute pants. The best glasses in the 80’s were the glasses with no lenses, they just had the bars that were supposed to keep the sun out. I recently found a pair of my old glasses from the 80’s and I couldn’t believe how big they were, they took up most of my face. Why were our glasses so big? I guess to go along with our huge hair? My first pair of glasses (in the early 1990s) were plastic magenta frames, and they were huge – a little too big for a kid’s face, but they were the style. They were very much Sally Jesse Raphael-type glasses. I do remember the ones with the bars, as much as I remember these “solar shades.” I always wonder what the appeal of giant glasses are, but I guess they are like all great trends – someone had to make them famous.
