A #FlashbackFriday In London and Paris

Well, actually, it hasn’t left South Jersey.

Welcome to week two of Flashback Friday’s horror movie trailers in anticipation of Halloween.  Last Friday, we witnessed the craziest Halloween party of them all in 1988’s Night of the Demons.

This week, we will stay in the 1980s (1981, to be exact), but also witness a sequel from 1997.  These are two movies about tourists who really have the misfortune of running into werewolves in major European cities.

First up, a trailer I saw during October, November, and December 1997 Saturday Night Live airings (the movie was actually released on Christmas Day and not, surprisingly, Halloween).  I captured this trailer in a commercial block from December 20, 1997, during (of all things) Saturday Night Live Christmas Past.

This was the second time young people go to Europe and fall victim to werewolves living among them in Paris…

My reaction exactly!!!!

But before that, in 1981, two students in London fell victim to the exact same problem…

I should note that the trailer for An American Werewolf in London came from the 1985 Vestron Home Video print (they acquired the home distribution rights in 1984 for this movie from MCA/Universal – it reverted back to Universal in the 2000s) of The Devil’s Gift, a really obscure horror movie that was  badly edited as a bookend for the movie Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders, which is known for being the last new episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to air on the Sci-Fi Channel.  I found out that that edited segment was actually a whole movie, which in its unedited form was still hokey and nonsensical.

Now, I knew about both movies (An American Werewolf in Paris came out when I was in ninth grade), but as far as I’ve been aware (and my boyfriend pointed this out too), An American Werewolf in London wasn’t a comedy.  I haven’t seen it, but the trailer makes it out to be humorous.  That’s actually the irony of the film’s soundtrack.  I’m sure it has its moments.

Methinks I’m going to have to check out at least one of these movies, though I don’t remember being interested in An American Werewolf in Paris when it came out.  But for some reason, An American Werewolf in London seems appealing.

And obviously really, really dark.  Like hard to see dark.

Flashback Friday continues the horror movie trailers leading up to Halloween – two weeks down, two more to go!

Have a great Friday!
