#MusicMonday – February 18, 2019

If no one else loves you for all that you are, Music Monday would be happy to fill the role.

We’re post Valentine’s Day weekend, and yesterday was a big milestone – it marked the one-year anniversary of me getting engaged to this guy…

It’s been a pretty exciting year.

In wrapping up the love songs of February’s Music Monday entries, I found one of my old favorites, an Adult Contemporary station staple from the 1980s that still makes its way into the shuffle once in a while.  The artist has a soulful voice, and I’ve often mistaken her for female R&B singers.

The year is 1988, and that singer is Leslie Wunderman, but you would know by her stage name, Taylor Dayne.  And she’ll always love you, for all that you are.

“I’ll Always Love You” is the third single from Taylor Dayne’s debut album, Tell It To My Heart.  After releasing two freestyle, dance-type songs (“Tell It To My Heart” and “Prove Your Love”), Dayne’s ability to sing a ballad was put on display with the release of this single.  Recorded in 1987, the single was released in 1988, and became Dayne’s first crossover hit, finding its place on three Billboard charts.

And when you click play, perhaps you’ll always love Dayne too!

“I’ll Always Love You” reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 (September 24, 1988), #2 on the Billboard US Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks (Dayne’s first song to have play on this format), and #21 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart (her only single to do so).

She would go on to release one more single from this album (“Don’t Rush Me”), and release one more album in the 1980s, Can’t Fight Fate.  Her career would be at its highest until the mid-1990s, but Dayne continues to sing, write songs, and has done some acting.  She even made an appearance on a previous Music Monday with a song from a 1990s Disney live-action movie that had a few people exclaiming “Blank Check!” in the comments on Facebook.

She waited just a little more time, and she’ll always love you for listening to her music!

I’ll leave you on that play on song lyrics.  Have a great Monday, and enjoy the music!
