The Daily Post Photo Challenge – I’d Rather Be…

This Daily Post Photo Challenge asks the important question of what you’d rather be doing right now.

If given the choice, what would you rather be doing, right now?

Given the choice, I’d rather be writing right now.

Actually, as I answer this question, that is what I’m doing right now.  However, I’m doing this before I begin work, and then I write while I’m on my lunch break.  I’ve mentioned it in the past, but this is what I’d love to be doing full time.  Right now, that’s not really an option, as I don’t profit from my work.

I’ve had personal concerns about pursuing writing as a career.  When it is for fun, I can work on it when I want, spend as much time on it as I choose, or even take time off from it when I’m on vacation.  I don’t take time off from it very often – I’ve been on vacation several times in the last three years, and schedule posts in advance, so things are always active around here, even when I’m not.  When it is for a job, I’ll always have to be on top of it, meeting deadlines and worrying about being “as good as my last piece.”  It’s a lofty ambition and I’m proud of my talent, and is one that I would never want to become something I resent.

And don’t get me started on burnout, writer’s block, and failing to live up to expectations.  That scares me, and is probably the biggest reason for not pursuing writing as a career.  If I can’t have fun doing it, then for me, it isn’t worth doing at all.

So I keep it around as a hobby, which keeps me centered, happy, and always busy. 🙂

    1. I work full time as a Secretary. Writing is my stress release and I consider it to be a second job. In addition to my blog, I also write for a nostalgia blog (Retroist). I usually work on everything in the morning, during lunch, and at night, especially the commentary videos. I don’t do much writing on the weekends, because I need some time off!

      1. I write blog posts four or five times a week. If I see a blog post on the weekends, I’ll try to write it in advance. It will either be published at 7:00 in the morning or 3:00 in the afternoon.

Whenever I write a blog post during the week, I try to write it between 4:00 and 5:00 in the afternoons.
