#MusicMonday – August 14, 2017

Music Monday.  It’s all you need.

Well, ok, you need oxygen, food, water, a job, a roof over your head, money, and love.  And music.

It’s RiffTrax Live week, and on Thursday night, the guys are riffing the 1983. Dr. Who “Five Doctors” movie, not featuring any of the more recent four doctors (or the new one that men have their boxers in a bunch over).  I’m looking forward to the movie, not just because I’m new to the whole Whovian thing (I’m actually on Matt Smith’s first season, but I just started watching the newer seasons in May).  Plus, I love the guys and their willingness to make fun of everything…including beloved franchises.

I’m referring to, of course, The Star Wars Holiday Special.  That really has tons of love and adoring fans backing it 100%.

I’m lucky I still have a boyfriend because of that movie.

Anyway…

RiffTrax Live week is a fun opportunity to go back and look at the archives of Mystery Science Theater 3000.  Given that this is Music Monday, it has to be music-centric.  If you’ve ever watched the show, you know these guys had alot of musical moments.  You can blame Michael J. Nelson for writing some of these songs.  Totally his fault you’ve gotten some of these stuck in your head.

One such song, from a movie I only managed to sit through recently, is When Loving Lovers Love, from the “experiment” Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.  The movie funded by WNET and New Jersey Public Television.  The original intent was create an entire science fiction series adapting famous works.  Unfortunately, this was the last of three produced movies.

It was filmed in Toronto, but has this distinct “PBS” feel to it.  Reminds me way too much of all those years spent watching 3-2-1 Contact.  Raul Julia is in it.  And it is terrible.  Like, MST3K terrible.  And while I saw this back in the mid-1990s, I didn’t see it again in its entirety until just recently.  I tried to a few years ago, but it didn’t happen.

The host segments between the movie were Public Television-themed, with Pearl Forrester (played by Mary Jo Pehl) hosting her own pledge drive-style special, complete with a cheesy music number.

I proudly present When Loving Lovers Love!

You know what?  I like pie…and I also know some guys!!!

At the MST3K reunion during the June 2016 RiffTrax live show, Corbett and Pehl talked about how the video of this was shown at Corbett’s wedding.  His joke was that his in-laws were probably wondering who their daughter was marrying.

I say greatest wedding song EVER!

And well, there you have it – Music Monday AND RiffTrax Live Week celebration-worthy!

And if you’re interested in seeing the “experiment” this song came from, then by all means…

Yes, that is Raul Julia.

Street Fighter wasn’t the only terrible movie he made!
