In Dreams

The mind is a strange, confusing, terrifying, and annoying thing.

A few days ago, I had this bizarre dream (wasn’t my first, won’t be my last) that actually had me baffled.  Considering when I had it, it made no sense on any level, but it was worth noting anyway.

I was on vacation last month (as you may know).  A week-long trip to California for Christmas.  It was relaxing, fun, and exactly what I needed.  I love the idea of getting away from work, though I always come back ready to return to normal life.  I’ve been back from my trip for almost a month, so to have a bizarre dream that involves my vacation would just be strange.  If I were to have a vacation-based dream, wouldn’t it happen before I left, and not long after I’ve come home?

So here’s the dream: I’m in college, and I left for California before the semester was over, so I didn’t take my finals or turn in final papers.  I effectively got “Incomplete” in all my courses.

And that’s where it took a strange turn: I graduated from college 11 years ago.  Aside from the two semesters I spent in technical school in 2008-2009, I haven’t been a full-time student since May of 2005.

According to Dreams Cloud, dreaming about school usually means there is a lesson you need to remember, you are learning something in the dream, or there is an opportunity  to learn something in life that your dream is bringing to your attention.  Expanding on that further this dream dictionary refers to college-level school dreams as: “Being in College may be a reference to your college days or a relationship from that period; may represent a lesson to be learned; or it may suggest you are experimenting or trying something new, as college students often do.”

I did try something new (flew cross-country, went to California), but no relationship was referenced (I’m not with either of the two boyfriends I dated during those years – both relationships ended many years ago), and I don’t recall learning a lesson.

I was a great student – not genius or perfect, but I carried a 3.2 GPA throughout my college career, took summer classes, and only graduated one semester past four years because I did my internship during the summer months, and had to wait to graduate that fall.  I never did anything that made me question my education or my abilities, and never did anything to make the school or professors question me as a student and person.  So to have a dream where I got even one “incomplete” (let alone four of them!) is just…unusual.

I also hadn’t discussed college or anything related to it that day, and I hadn’t talked about California either.  I’m not quite sure what to make of it either.

I’ve heard that dreams teach, but I’m not sure what I was supposed to learn here.
