The Daily Post Writing Prompt: Say Your Name

Today’s prompt:

Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?

I’m actually not named after anyone specific, and I’m not really sure how my mom arrived at the name “Allison.”  However, it is the commonly-spelled version that is frequently misspelled by the masses.  I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve seen one “L” and how many times I’ve been asked to spell it so someone can say it out loud and totally foul it up.  It’s not rocket science, and I get annoyed when someone with a much more difficult last name can’t wrap their brain around how to spell mine correctly.  It’s a nice boost for the ego, I tell ya.

As many times as I hate hearing my name (which, for some reason, always sounds like it’s being said by someone who is extra whiny), I wouldn’t change it.  Because my blog (And identity in writing), is Allison’s Written Words.  I can’t imagine having to change all of my writing stuff to fit this.  And then there’s all the legal things I’d have to go through…yeah, getting married and changing your last name is easier.  I’ll stick with that when the time comes.

And don’t get me started on my last name…

  1. People tend to have a really hard time with names when they need to say them out loud. Your name seems easy to me. My name, Ryan, seems easy too- yet I’ve been called Rain so many times…

    1. I actually had a friend at one time (female) whose name is Ryanne, pronounced “Ryan.” She always said people called her “Rain!” Trust me, if there is a way to flub Allison, it has happened. I’ve also been called Alicia more times than I care to remember – seriously, where did someone get Alicia from Allison, unless they just absolutely were not paying attention?!

      1. On that thought, I’m called Eric more than I am Ryan (or a variation). I answer to both now. ~Cheers
