The Daily Post Writing Prompt – Sixteen Tons

In response to this writing prompt:

How do you feel about your job? Do you spring out of bed, looking forward to work? Or, is your job a soul-destroying monotony of pure drudgery, or somewhere in between?

I think everyone says there are great, good, and not-so-great/good things about their jobs.  I’m convinced saying one hates their job is a bit harsh.  Sure, you may dislike what you do once in a while, and yes some jobs are soul-crushing (or certain aspects), but I always try to find the good in everything.

I am a Secretary at a non-profit, and it’s actually the world’s most deceptive job title EVER.  Secretaries now are not Secretaries in those 1950s training videos. We don’t sit and prepare mail and type letters all day.  During the course of my day, I receipt in money and batch check/money order/cash payments, I prepare reports for the state so we get paid for the services we provide (we provide residential, supportive living, employment, respite, and recreation services for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities), I do lots of data entry (one of the biggest parts of my job), create signup forms, and of course, all of the normal Secretarial duties.

I don’t think anyone springs out of bed at 5:30 am unless they’re going on vacation and have an early flight, but I don’t drag my feet coming into work in the morning.  Considering the job market, and the one in my area, I’m happy and lucky to have a job.  I’ve been in my position for six years – I do love the people I work with, and they make work life fun.  I also have this fun little writing hobby to keep me centered and focused.  I don’t think everyone likes every single little aspect of their job – me, for instance, I dread filing.  That’s one of my most minor job responsibilities.

  1. Totally agree. As a fellow Secretary, I had when someone says, “You’re just a Secretary” No I am much more. I am the first impression someone gets of this business. I am the one who knows where EVERYTHING is, I am the one who can fill in where I need to, and I am the one person people come to vent. I used to run a business and make the big bucks. I HATED every minute of it. Now I feel important, needed and part of a team. While I am thankful for my job and I love my fellow co-workers is STILL work, and can be a nuisance at times, but then isn’t that work is supposed to be. 🙂 Oh I also hate filing. It is of the devil and comes from the very pits of Hell itself. 🙂
